Our Policies:

The Dancearts Competition Team is open to dancers ages five to eighteen.  As a team member, dancers have the opportunity to experience rehearsals and performances at a more professional level. It is important that dancers' conduct and attitude during classes and rehearsals is positive and respectful. This is also expected in relationships with fellow dancers, teachers, choreographers at the studio and in any other dance setting. As a competition dancer, team members represent Dancearts and set an example for the rest of our students.

Dancers must be enrolled in, and attending, a ballet class for the entire school year at Dancearts. Dancers must also be enrolled in, and attending, a technique class for the entire year that correlates with the style of each of their competition pieces. Three un-excused absences from a technique class may result in removal from the competition piece.

Rehearsal Attendance and Preparedness:

Attendance at all rehearsals is expected of all competition dancers. However, dancers are allowed a maximum of three excused absences from competition rehearsal per season. Dancers may not miss the competition rehearsal session the weekend before they compete. Absences make rehearsals a hardship for everyone involved, but we do understand that exceptions are occasionally necessary.

Dancers are expected to show up at rehearsals knowing their choreography (after it is taught). This is so that rehearsals can run efficiently, teachers do not have to take time re-teaching, and so that students can get the most out of their rehearsal time. We take videos at the end of each rehearsal session so that students can review on their own time. Dancers will also have copies of all their music via Google Drive. If a dancer does not know their choreography because they did not go over it at home, they may be asked to step out of rehearsal and return once it's learned. If this occurs with a soloist, their rehearsal for the day may be cancelled. Time is limited and we expect dancers to be prepared and behave professionally.

Summer Intensive Workshops at Dancearts are highly recommended for all competition dancers.

Scheduling:
Rehearsal schedules will be posted in the Competition GroupMe and on this website page. Rehearsals for out-of-town choreographers often take place over the summer. This can be over the course of a few weeks or during just a few hours on a weekend, depending on the choreographer's availability. During the school year, the majority of rehearsals take place on Sunday afternoons. This is because studio space is available and both dancers and teachers have free time. The rest of rehearsals often take place on Thursdays. Rehearsal length varies based on the needs of individual pieces.

Solos:

Solos are special opportunities which are awarded to dancers who we feel are ready. Dancers have the chance to work with a choreographer of their choice in a style of their choosing.

Soloists are selected each year based on skill level, work ethic, age, attendance records, and attitude/etiquette in rehearsals/class. The number of group pieces our team has each year is also taken into consideration when selecting soloists, since most competitions have a limit on the number of pieces each studio can bring. Dancers should be aware that they may not perform their solo at every competition we attend for this reason or others, such as a dancer not being prepared, poor attendance, or other extenuating circumstances.
